A Tree Inside A House

Even cut, the tree is so vegetable–
green and waxy dressed up
in jewelry of plastic lights,

so animate, striving earnestly
as broccoli or a lima bean
sprouting in a wet paper towel.

Sometimes the soul’s clammy white
root lacks soil,
eats air.
